Self Exam:  While looking in the mirror:  place you index fingers in each ear and open your jaw as wide as you can, several times, and feel for clicking in the jaw joint.  If you feel the joint clicking you have TMJ.  Also look to see if the jaw moves straight up and down and not to the side.

Chronic neck and shoulder tension, headaches, clicking in the jaw are all some of the symptoms of TMJ-d and Bruxism.  Dentist treat the problem using braces and appliances to change bite and to keep you from clinching your teeth.  Chiropractors adjust the neck to correct cervical bone mis-alignment.  But the truth of the pain and tension is in the muscles.  Doing specific massage techniques to release muscle tension and pain is a straight forward method of treatment.  I am able to identify which muscles are causing the problem and use NeuroMuscular Reeducation to reteach the muscles to relax.  Most of the time TMJ and muscles related to the pain are in a "Chronic Pain Cycle" and do not know how to relax or have forgotten. Most people to not even know their pain is even related to the jaw or TMJ issues.
